Sculpture and Circular Economy:

Searching for coherence and constantly concerned by my environmental impact, I carve my sculptures in blocks of marble, granite and alabaster destined to be dumped. I often carve in old tombstones, forgotten stones or "waste'" blocks. Of course, this requires a very specific know-how, as these stones have suffered from time, knocks and frost... but it's an ethical, technical and aesthetic choice. # REUSE-REDUCE-RECYCLE

carved in reused tombstones.

All my sculptures are carved in reused blocks of marble and granite. This is an important part of my artistic approach. By sculpting them, I exalt their beauty and give them a new meaning. Of course it's also the way I question our society of over-consumption.
This approach took an even deeper meaning in the case of this monument, sculpted from old gravestones retrieved during the cemetery clean-up. Apart from the environmental benefit of reusing these stones (instead of new stones), it creates a bridge between past and future. It's a way of remembering and keeping alive the memory of this community former inhabitants. And so it is with great respect and tenderness that I sculpt these stones, as they also are for me a symbol of all the families and friends who came to pay their respects to them.
The central sculpture in the Ferlens memorial is inspired by the lightness, fluidity and whiteness of the potato flower, depicted on its coat of arms. It is carved from a block of Cristallina marble, a white marble veined with brown and black - a Swiss marbles (from Ticino) - and was also one of the tombstones I reused. The base is made of Labrador brown granite and is inspired by the way our soils are cracking as a result of drought and the climate crisis. It thus becomes a symbol of hope, with the flower taking root and opening up despite everything, and it's also a link between past and future.
